Although the views of just one man, this book provides original and valuable insights into Zionism, Communism, Nazism, the ideas behind World War II and the Cold War. Waton is a lone thinker, a man who acknowledges the virtues of opponents, a synthesiser of many traditions, a prisoner of one tradition but also a fugitive from that tradition. The reader will deeply disagree with Waton on some points, will surely agree on others, and be deeply stimulated throughout.
Rabbi Waton wrote his book in 1939 and saw the Jews being at the crossroads of history. In his book he clearly reveals himself to be a Marxist and saw Mussolini, Hitler, and Stalin--all as fascists and state capitalists.
Surprisingly, Waton advocated for the Jews to make their peace with the "nazis and fascists" realizing the Jewish-led boycott against National Socialist Germany was a disaster. His line of reasoning was that all of the democracies of the world would eventually become fascist and/or state capitalist. After this, Waton believed socialism would emerge and then be followed by universal communism.
