Book description
This handbook for propagandists was prepared by the following officials of the Gaupropagandaamt [Gau propaganda office] Oberdonau of the NSDAP: Leo Bauer, Robert Gessner, Ferri Hietler, Friedrich Koch, Walther Streitfeld, Karl Struckl, and Herbert A. Zieband. It was put together by Dr. Franz H. Huber.
The Handbook of the NS Propagandist (often referred to as the Nazi Propaganda Handbook or Handbuch des NS-Propagandisten) refers to official instructional manuals and directives distributed to propagandists by Joseph Goebbels's German Nazi Party’s identity manual and the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda Lesson Resource: Nazi Propaganda.
These internal documents were used to implement strict, authoritarian control over the German population Lesson Resource: Nazi Propaganda. Key aspects of the Third Reich's propaganda methodology include:
- The Fibel für den Propagandaleiter: This specific "primer" was published in 1942 as a guide for local party propagandists. It outlined the mechanics of running successful propaganda, stressing that messages must be easily understood, emotionally driven, and repeated constantly.
- Centralization of Media: Goebbels strictly forbade local chapters from ad-libbing or straying from central Party doctrine. The ministry utilized the Zeitschriften-Dienst (Periodical Service) to send strict guidelines to magazines, dictating exactly what topics to cover.
- Targeted Messaging: The handbooks provided directives for tailoring messages to specific demographics (e.g., NS-Frauen-Warte for women or Der Pimpf for boys) Propaganda in Nazi Germany and Lesson Resource: Nazi Propaganda.
