Book description

Three hundred years ago, Johann Andreas Eisenmenger finished the most thoroughly documented examination of Rabbinic Judaism ever produced by a Christian scholar. He spent nearly twenty years reading the primary sources: the Talmud, the Midrash, the legal codes, the Kabbalistic literature, all in the original Hebrew and Aramaic, citing everything by tractate and folio so anyone who wanted to check his work could do exactly that.

Before a single copy reached a reader, the Holy Roman Emperor suppressed it at the request of the Frankfurt Jewish community. Eisenmenger died four years later without ever seeing it published. It finally appeared in 1711 under Prussian royal protection, was suppressed again, resurfaced, was plagiarized, attacked, and buried by turns.
