Book description
Lest We Regret (1943) is a political book by British journalist and author Douglas Reed. Written as a sequel to his earlier bestseller Insanity Fair, it functioned as a warning against the post-WWII peace process, but remains highly controversial due to its antisemitic undertones and its dismissal of early Nazi persecution of Jewish people.
Key details about the book:
- Core Premise: Reed argued that the impending post-war peace was a "greater danger" than the war itself, fearing that Britain would repeat the diplomatic mistakes made during the interwar period.
- Critical Reception: In a 1943 review, George Orwell criticized the book. While Orwell acknowledged Reed's early warnings about Hitler, he condemned Reed for minimizing the Holocaust and for leaning into conspiracy theories regarding Zionism, communism, and Jewish people.
- Legacy: The work cemented Reed's reputation as a uniquely controversial and polarizing figure, causing him to eventually be dropped by most major publishers.
