Book description
Daniel Keith Ludwig (1897-1992) built one of the largest fortunes of the twentieth century from shipping, pioneering the construction of giant oil tankers and bulk carriers, and in the early 1980s was ranked the richest man in America.
Fiercely private, he avoided interviews and photographs so completely that he remained almost unknown to the public even at the height of his wealth. His holdings stretched across hotels, savings and loans, real estate, mining, and oil, and his most audacious venture, the vast Jari project in the Brazilian Amazon, sought to build a pulp and timber empire in the rainforest before ending in heavy losses.
The Invisible Billionaire (1986) pieces together the life and far-flung business empire of this elusive tycoon.
