Book description

The Psychology of Dictatorship is the definitive psychological study of leading Nazis, undertaken by the prison psychologist at Nuremberg and still a key text in the discipline.

Gilbert was born to Austrian-Jewish immigrants, and obtained his PhD in psychology from Columbia University in 1939.

He was sent to Nuremberg because of his knowledge of German and service in the war as a first lieutenant in the American army. He became the confidant of the prisoners, and his profiles - developed with the use of Rorschach inkblot tests and IQ tests - were used both in proving their fitness for trial and in the trials themselves. His book gives psychological profiles of each of the defendants and also attempts a posthumous profile of Hitler.

Gilbert introduces the study with chapters on the popular appeal of dictatorship, specifically with regard to Germany, and the implications of the study for the discipline of psychology.
